When you need to visit a urologist, it’s no laughing matter. But navigating the healthcare system is a challenge, and finding a specialist who takes Medicaid is an even bigger one. Therefore, we have put together this list for our CDPAP patients of the top 10 urologists in New York who accept Medicaid.

What Do Urologists Do?

A urologist is a medical doctor who specializes in the human urinary tract. It’s a common misconception that urologists will only work with men. This is not the case. Urologists can treat urinary system issues in both men and women. This includes not just the urethra, but the bladder, the kidneys, and other associated organs. The reason for the confusion is understandable, though; urologists also treat the male reproductive system. Here, there is a difference, since the female reproductive system is treated by a gynecologist.

Urology is a broad field, and can include surgeons or even some general practitioners who have earned a urology license. That said, there are a few specialties within urology that are worth briefly mentioning:

●   Urologic oncologists – These specialists treat urinary system cancers, including bladder and kidney cancer, as well as male reproductive cancers like prostate and testicle cancer.

●   Pediatric urologists – Pediatric urologists specialize in children

●   Male infertility urologists – These are doctors who specialize in male infertility issues like low sperm count.

●   Female urologists – These specialists focus exclusively on the female urinary system. Often, they are also gynecologists and can treat female reproductive issues.

●   Neurourologists – These doctors have certifications in urology and neurology, and focus on urinary issues that are caused by the nervous system.

It’s worth mentioning that even urologists who are surgeons may not perform all procedures. If you need to have a particular procedure done, make sure to ask about that procedure at the outset. Otherwise, you may waste time with a doctor who simply can’t do what you need.

To become a urologist, an individual must first earn their bachelor’s degree and their medical degree. After this, they must complete a residency, where they work for four to five years under the supervision of a more seasoned urologist. Then, they must take and pass the American Board of Urology’s certification exam. After that, they can finally practice on their own. However, if they want to further specialize in something like pediatric oncology, they’ll need to complete an additional 1-2-year fellowship.

It would be difficult to list all the conditions Urologists can treat. That said, here is a list of the most common issues Urologists are trained to manage:

●   Bed wetting

●   Bladder infections

●   Bladder prolapse

●   Cancers of the urinary system or male reproductive system

●   Enlarged prostate gland

●   Erectile dysfunction

●   Incontinence

●   Interstitial cystitis

●   Kidney disease

●   Kidney stones

●   Male infertility

●   Overactive bladder

●   Prostatitis

●   Undescended testicles

●   Urinary tract blockages

●   Urinary tract infections (UTI)

●   Varicoceles

Urologists will usually begin by performing a physical examination. Depending on the issue, they may order blood work, a urine test, or imaging tests for further diagnosis.
