What do rheumatologists do?

A rheumatologist is a medical doctor or pediatrician who has gotten board certification. They specialize in diagnosing and treating health issues that affect the bones, joints, and muscles.

Common conditions and diseases rheumatologists deal with include:

  • Arthritis
  • Dermatomyositis
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Gout
  • Pseudogout
  • Lupus
  • Lyme Disease
  • Osteopenia
  • Osteoporosis
  • Polymyalgia Rheumatica
  • Polymyositis
  • Rheumatic Diseases
  • Sarcoidosis
  • Scleroderma (Systemic Sclerosis)
  • Septic Arthritis
  • Sjogren’s syndrome
  • +Many More

Rheumatologists go through about ten years of educational training. After going to medical school for four years, they then do a three to four-year residency in internal medicine. They then must complete an in-depth training program, called a fellowship, to go through special training to become a rheumatologist.

To become board certified in rheumatology, rheumatologists must complete an extensive exam. The exam is done through the American Board of Internal Medicine and is extremely thorough. The exam also must be redone every ten years if the rheumatologist wants to keep their board certification title.
